David and Howard, but not Vicky, with an olde racing car
(1971 1600cc Merlyn Mk 20 in case you were wonderin').
It's for sale at £3000 to you my son. Vicky's verdict? 'Don't bother Dave, walk away now'.
What manner of non-F5000/F2 reversed-Tyrell-6-wheeled-lunacy is this winning the first Derek Bell Trophy Race? It's a 1976 3000cc March 2 4 0. It obviously wore itself out as it didn't appear in the second race. Shame.
Ex-James Hunt F1 McLaren couldn't race due to a cracked cylinder head (we think that's what they said). They weren't hap, anyway.
Despite all that, it is our car of the day.
Ah yes, for the racer it's all a matter of trade-off. Invent a gubbins to keep yer rear engine cool but at the cost of extra weight. Tricky.
Having started from the back of the grid, after problems in the first Derek Bell Trophy race, Michael Lyons (64) waves bye-bye to initial leader Mark Dwyer (22 - F2 March) as he powers past at the end of lap 2 in his 1974 F5000 Lola T332. He went on to win. By miles. He was dead happy about it an' all.
P.S. We mentioned last time at Silverstone, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, that it would be lovely and warm come mid-May. Well, guess what? It was!
